For these areas, we often recommend Griselinia littoralis or Olearia, which have evolved to handle seaside conditions. Their leathery leaves act as a natural shield, providing an effective windbreak for the rest of your garden.
Dealing with Heavy Clay Soils Much of the Preston and Blackburn area sits on heavy clay. While this soil is nutrient-rich, it can become waterlogged in winter and rock-hard in summer. Hornbeam is the unsung hero here; it looks very similar to Beech but is much more tolerant of “wet feet” and heavy ground.
Privacy in Urban Spaces For our customers in Manchester and Bolton, space is often at a premium, and privacy is the goal. Portuguese Laurel is a fantastic choice for urban gardens. It has smaller, darker leaves than the common Cherry Laurel and can be kept tightly pruned, making it perfect for narrow boundaries where you need height without taking up half the lawn.
