The Ultimate Guide to Bare Root Hedge Planting in the North West

Establishing strong, lush, and long-lasting natural boundaries around your property is one of the most rewarding landscape investments a homeowner or commercial property manager can make. Living hedges not only provide privacy, security, and shelter from wind, but they also offer a vital sanctuary for local British wildlife, encouraging biodiversity in every garden across Lancashire, Cumbria, Manchester, and beyond. As winter turns to spring, horticulturists and garden enthusiasts know that now is the prime window to invest in high-quality hedging. At World of Hedges Ltd, our dedicated plant nursery specialises in delivering resilient, vibrant hedge options tailored to your local soil and climate conditions. Whether you are looking to establish a formal evergreen boundary or a traditional native mix, understanding the nuances of selection and planting is key to long-term success.
The Unique Advantages of Choosing Bare Root Hedging
When establishing a dynamic, cost-effective border, bare root plants stand out as the ideal choice during the traditional dormant season, running through to late March. Unlike container-grown plants, bare root hedges are lifted directly from nursery fields while dormant, leaving their root systems free from pot-bound restrictions. This offers several immediate advantages for property owners across the North West. Firstly, bare root specimens settle extraordinarily well into native soils, allowing their root systems to spread rapidly as temperatures warm in spring. This leads to a sturdier, more resilient hedge in the long run. Secondly, bare root hedging offers exceptional value for money, making it far more economical to plant extensive runs of hedging around larger garden perimeters, agricultural plots, or commercial sites. Furthermore, bare root planting is environmentally friendly, eliminating the need for single-use plastic pots and excessive potting compost. Choosing bare root stock from World of Hedges ensures you receive robust plants direct from the growers, perfectly primed for rapid establishment and healthy foliage growth.
Selecting the Perfect Hedge Species for Your Property
Choosing the right hedging species requires careful consideration of your site’s specific conditions, such as soil type, exposure to coastal winds in places like Blackpool and Southport, or shade levels in urban areas like Manchester and Preston. Formal evergreen hedging options, such as English Yew (Taxus baccata) or Laurel, provide dense, year-round privacy and sound insulation, creating a stately frame around contemporary and traditional homes alike. Alternatively, beech (Fagus sylvatica) and hornbeam offer stunning seasonal transitions, retaining dried, copper-coloured leaves through winter before bursting into fresh green in spring. For those seeking traditional rural charm and ecological benefits, mixed native hedging incorporating hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, and field maple provides an unbeatable security barrier while supporting birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects. At World of Hedges Ltd, our extensive range caters to every microclimate in Lancashire, Cumbria, and neighbouring regions. Our expert team takes the guesswork out of planting schemes, ensuring you select healthy plants that will thrive in your specific garden environment.
Essential Planting and Maintenance Advice for British Climates
Proper planting techniques during the bare root season lay the foundation for a thriving hedge that will last for decades. Begin by preparing the planting trench thoroughly: clear away weeds, loosen compacted soil, and incorporate well-rotted organic matter or root-building mycorrhizal fungi to encourage root expansion. When planting bare root stock between late autumn and March, ensure the roots are kept moist prior to going into the ground, and plant them at the exact depth line visible on the stem from their nursery growth. Firm the soil around the roots firmly to eliminate air pockets, and water generously immediately after planting. During the initial growing season, maintaining a weed-free zone around the base of the young plants is vital, as weeds compete aggressively for soil nutrients and moisture. Regular watering during dry spells throughout spring and early summer, paired with light structural trimming, will stimulate dense, bushy growth from the base upwards. Proper early care guarantees your hedging border will mature quickly into a strong, attractive, and windproof barrier.

Steve shared his expertise, experience and guided us through what we needed. All installed as promised by the team, and the 1 little thing that got missed was fixed the very next day...which is often when you realise someone is true to their word. Now to watch it grow!
Went to World of Hedges to buy a hedge for my front garden and I couldn't fault the guy who served me. Very enthusiastic and passionate about his job. I asked him what hedge would not lose their leaves, be low and easy to maintain, good for wildlife and would be able to grow round my existing plants? He gave me a few options taking me to have a look at each type. When I decided which one to choose I asked him how many he thought I needed and how to plant and look after them. As I noted this down, I couldn't write fast enough he was that passionate about the hedge and how to look after them. I think photographs say a thousand words and I am so happy with the choice I made. Very impressed with the service I will definitely be going back there again. Thanks World of Hedges
We wanted mature shrubs for a border at the side of our driveway. We went to World of Hedges and were immediately impressed by the choice and quality of the plants in the nursery. With help from Steve and his team, we selected Pittosporum Elizabeth and Eleagnus. They are now planted and are exactly what we wanted. Steve and his team have been ultra-professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. We are totally delighted with the entire service package.
Amazing customer service from Steve and his team. Nothing was too much trouble. The advice and time spent with us explaining what our options were and suggestions of what would work in our garden was fantastic. Can't recommend them highly enough. The installation team which came out were great, super quick and left everywhere immaculate. Steve's knowledge and guidance was marvellous and so helpful – Top bloke!
Steve and team planted a Griselinia hedge (New Zealand privet) at front of house today, replacing spindly, unattractive Hornbeam supplied by builders. Soil dug out and replaced with good quality topsoil, well built up around plants. Good healthy plants from own nursery. Looks great already! Everyone friendly and knowledgeable. All left tidy. Happy to recommend.
