The Ultimate Guide to Bare Root Hedges in Lancashire & the North West

Establishing Beautiful Living Boundaries with Bare Root Hedging
Establishing living boundaries is one of the most rewarding investments you can make for your property across Lancashire, Cumbria, and the broader North West. Bare root hedging offers an extraordinary opportunity to establish dense, healthy, and visually striking green boundaries at a fraction of the cost of container-grown plants. At World of Hedges Ltd, based in Garstang, we specialise in supplying top-tier hedge varieties perfectly suited to local soil types and British climate conditions. The bare root planting season runs strictly during the dormant winter months through to early spring. With bare root stock available from our nursery until 26th March, now is the ideal time to plan your planting project and secure premium nursery stock for your garden, rural estate, or commercial boundary.
Why Choose Bare Root Hedging for Your Property Boundary?
Bare root hedges are plants lifted directly from nursery fields while dormant, without soil around their root systems. This traditional, environmentally friendly propagation method offers substantial benefits for homeowners, agricultural landowners, and landscapers across Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn, Bolton, and Manchester. Firstly, bare root plants are significantly more economical than potted alternatives, allowing you to cover expansive distances, such as property perimeters or farm boundaries, without overspending your budget.
Secondly, because their root systems interact directly with your native garden soil from day one, bare root hedges often establish stronger, deeper root networks. This leads to exceptional drought resilience and robust top growth when spring arrives. Furthermore, planting native British bare root hedge species promotes local ecological diversity, providing vital habitat, shelter, and food sources for songbirds, pollinators, and small mammals. By planting during the dormant season before the end of March, you ensure that your hedging develops a sturdy root foundation before summer heat arrives, creating natural living walls that enhance privacy, security, and curb appeal for decades to come.
Top Hedge Varieties Available from World of Hedges
Selecting the right hedging species depends on your specific soil conditions, exposed weather elements, and desired height or aesthetic. At World of Hedges Ltd, our Garstang plant nursery cultivates and supplies a comprehensive range of traditional hedging plants suitable for properties in Burnley, Chorley, Southport, and Cumbria. Some of our most popular varieties include:
- English Yew (Taxus baccata): A classic evergreen option offering formal, dense green privacy walls that thrive in most well-drained soils.
- Beech (Fagus sylvatica): Renowned for its vibrant green foliage in spring that turns a striking copper colour in autumn, retaining foliage through winter for year-round screening.
- Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus): Extremely tough and ideally suited to heavy clay soils common across Lancashire, providing excellent windbreak protection.
- Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna): A hardy native species perfect for security, farm boundaries, and wildlife havens, featuring beautiful spring blossoms and autumnal berries.
- Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium): A popular semi-evergreen variety fast-growing enough to establish dense formal hedges quickly in suburban gardens.
Our experienced nursery team is always on hand to guide you through selecting the ideal variety tailored specifically to your site’s microclimate and soil quality.
Essential Planting and Care Tips for Bare Root Hedges
To achieve maximum growth and ensure high survival rates for your bare root stock, proper planting techniques are essential. As soon as your order arrives from our Garstang nursery, keep the root systems moist and protected from drying winds or severe frost. Dig a trench along your marked boundary line that is roughly twice as wide as the root spread, thoroughly loosening the compacted soil beneath.
Mix in rich organic compost or bone meal to boost root establishment. Position each bare root plant at the exact depth it was previously growing in the nursery field, clearly indicated by the soil line on the lower main stem. Gently backfill the trench, firming the soil around the roots with your boot to eliminate trapped air pockets. Water thoroughly immediately after planting, even during damp winter months, to settle the soil around the fine root hairs. Applying a thick layer of organic mulch around the base with bark chips helps retain vital soil moisture and suppresses aggressive weed competition throughout the critical first growing season.

Investing in high-quality hedging transforms your outdoor space into a private, secure, and beautiful natural sanctuary. Steve shared his expertise, experience and guided us through what we needed. All installed as promised by the team, and the 1 little thing that got missed was fixed the very next day...which is often when you realise someone is true to their word. Now to watch it grow!
Went to World of Hedges to buy a hedge for my front garden and I couldn't fault the guy who served me. Very enthusiastic and passionate about his job. I asked him what hedge would not lose their leaves, be low and easy to maintain, good for wildlife and would be able to grow round my existing plants? He gave me a few options taking me to have a look at each type. When I decided which one to choose I asked him how many he thought I needed and how to plant and look after them. As I noted this down, I couldn't write fast enough he was that passionate about the hedge and how to look after them. I think photographs say a thousand words and I am so happy with the choice I made. Very impressed with the service I will definitely be going back there again. Thanks World of Hedges
We wanted mature shrubs for a border at the side of our driveway. We went to World of Hedges and were immediately impressed by the choice and quality of the plants in the nursery. With help from Steve and his team, we selected Pittosporum Elizabeth and Eleagnus. They are now planted and are exactly what we wanted. Steve and his team have been ultra-professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. We are totally delighted with the entire service package.
Amazing customer service from Steve and his team. Nothing was too much trouble. The advice and time spent with us explaining what our options were and suggestions of what would work in our garden was fantastic. Can't recommend them highly enough. The installation team which came out were great, super quick and left everywhere immaculate. Steve's knowledge and guidance was marvellous and so helpful – Top bloke!
Steve and team planted a Griselinia hedge (New Zealand privet) at front of house today, replacing spindly, unattractive Hornbeam supplied by builders. Soil dug out and replaced with good quality topsoil, well built up around plants. Good healthy plants from own nursery. Looks great already! Everyone friendly and knowledgeable. All left tidy. Happy to recommend.
